Establish whether the existing garden building is suitable to move

A garden-building enquiry starts with the structure itself: its type, dimensions, construction and present condition. Send photographs of the exterior, interior, base and access around it where these can be obtained safely. Explain whether it is a shed, garden office or another structure and provide manufacturer information if available. The assessment needs the building that exists today, not only the original product photograph or the dimensions advertised when it was new.

Tell us about repairs, alterations, leaks or visible deterioration and whether the structure has previously been dismantled. A building that remains usable in its current position is not automatically suitable for taking apart, transporting and rebuilding. Ask for feasibility to be assessed before arranging a receiving base or promising a buyer a delivery date. The proposal should state what can be considered and any limitations or separate specialist work required.

Describe fixed attachments and connected services, including electricity, plumbing, heating or communications equipment. Identify who will arrange any required disconnection and preparation with the appropriate specialists. A physical transport enquiry should not be treated as an electrical or building-services appointment. The structure needs an agreed state of readiness before collection, with responsibilities clear for everything that must happen before the relocation work can begin.

Explain whether you own both the structure and the relevant land, or whether other parties need to authorise access and removal. Confirm the permissions relevant to your property and proposed destination through the appropriate channels. Survey access for the agreed components or prepared structure

Show the route from the building to the loading position, including side passages, gates, steps and turns. Provide useful measurements and explain anything that can or cannot be made available. A path wide enough for a person may not accommodate a prepared panel or other component. The method should be assessed against the structure and route together, rather than assuming every garden building can be moved intact or reduced to convenient sizes.

Give equivalent information at the destination and identify the final position. Explain the access available for unloading and the route to the receiving base. If the building is being bought from another property, coordinate with the seller so photographs and access details are accurate. The receiving owner should also know the agreed condition and component inventory, rather than discovering a different structure from the one described in the original advert.

Empty the building under an agreed plan and list any contents you also want transported. Tools, furniture and stored materials are a separate load from the structure itself. Disclose unusual or potentially restricted contents and ask what can be accepted. Do not leave cupboards or containers full on the assumption that moving the garden building includes an unspecified clearance of everything stored inside it.

Tell us about other work occurring on either site, such as landscaping, fencing or construction. A route or base may be unavailable while those activities continue. Identify the person coordinating the sequence and report changes before the appointment. If unusual access equipment or specialist handling may be needed, request assessment and explicit confirmation; no particular method should be assumed included in a general relocation enquiry.

Prepare the destination independently of the transport appointment

Confirm who is responsible for the receiving base and whether it is suitable for the actual structure being moved. Share relevant manufacturer or specialist requirements and have the responsible provider address them. Base construction, groundworks and structural alterations are separate tasks unless expressly assessed and agreed. The fact that transport can be arranged does not establish that an existing patch of ground is ready to support the relocated building.

Discuss what reassembly or placement is included and what remains outside the proposed service. Roofing, weatherproofing, fixing to a base and reconnecting services need clear responsibility where relevant. Do not treat a delivered set of components as a finished usable building. The written scope should describe the transport finish point and any subsequent work required before the owner uses the structure for its intended purpose.

If components will be stored between collection and installation, explain the expected period and handling requirements. Ask how they will be identified, what access is needed and who can authorise release. Retain the component record and instructions for the receiving stage. A building relocation with a storage interval needs that interval planned explicitly, rather than assuming the parts can simply wait somewhere until the site becomes ready.

Compare proposals by the complete work and the exclusions

Review the quotation for assessment, accepted preparation, dismantling if appropriate, transport, placement and reassembly where agreed. Identify separately arranged trades and site work. Ask what happens if concealed damage or an unsuitable component is discovered, and who can authorise a revised plan. A responsible proposal should acknowledge the actual structure's condition instead of promising that every old building can be rebuilt as though it were a new kit.

Keep photographs, the agreed inventory and condition notes available to the person receiving the structure. Confirm the appointment arrangements at both properties and any deadline for leaving the collection site. If the load or destination changes, request an updated assessment. Additional contents, a narrower receiving route or a later base completion can affect the work even when the main building remains the same.
