Identify the instrument before asking for a piano-moving price

Tell us whether the instrument is an upright, baby grand, grand or another type, and include the maker and model if known. Send photographs of the complete piano in its current room and provide dimensions from reliable records or measurements that can be obtained without moving it. Explain any additional items, such as a bench or separate accessories. A useful enquiry begins with the actual instrument rather than treating all pianos as the same load.

Describe known condition concerns and any advice from your piano technician. Mention loose or damaged external parts, a previous repair affecting handling or instructions supplied by the manufacturer. Do not attempt specialist dismantling to make the instrument easier to collect. The removal assessment should establish the required preparation and handling before an appointment is agreed, with any technical work assigned to the appropriate person.

Explain why the piano is moving and where it needs to finish. A room-to-room relocation, a purchase collection and a house move each involve different access and scheduling questions. If the instrument is part of a wider household consignment, identify it separately so its requirements are considered rather than included as an ordinary piece of furniture. If it is a single-item job, provide the same detailed access information a larger move would need.

State which facts remain uncertain. You may not yet have access to the receiving property or a seller may be unable to confirm the model immediately. Those gaps should be identified and resolved as part of assessment. A provisional enquiry is useful, but the final quotation needs enough information to define the physical work and determine whether the proposed arrangement is suitable for the instrument and route.

Assess the complete route at both properties

Show the path from the piano's current position to the loading area, including doorways, corners, stairs, thresholds and changes in level. Explain the floor on which it stands and whether a lift is available, with relevant dimensions and booking requirements. A ground-floor address does not by itself establish an uncomplicated route. Photographs should show the areas the instrument must pass through, not only the front of the building.

Provide the proposed vehicle position and describe the carrying distance and surface between it and the entrance. Tell us if access depends on another person's land, a shared driveway or a timed loading arrangement. Identify who can confirm permissions and ensure the information reflects the conditions expected on the appointment date. Scaffolding, parked vehicles or construction materials can change a route after an earlier visit.

At delivery, identify the intended room and position and supply equivalent route details. Do not assume the piano can be placed wherever the household later decides; a different floor or room may require another assessment. If renovations or floor work are under way, establish when the receiving area is ready. Tell us about other contractors or deliveries using the same entrance so the proposed sequence can be reviewed.

If the route appears to require unusual lifting or specialist access equipment, describe the issue and request assessment. Do not improvise a trial move or assume a particular method will be available. Any exceptional handling needs an explicit plan and agreed responsibility. The quotation should reflect the route accepted for the job, with changes reported before the team arrives rather than discovered when the instrument is ready to be moved.

Separate transport preparation from technical piano work

Ask what preparation is included in the proposed relocation and which tasks require a piano specialist. The owner should not infer that transport includes servicing, tuning, repairs or technical adjustment. If a technician is involved before or after the move, coordinate the appointments and share relevant handling instructions. Keep the instrument identified consistently across those arrangements so each provider understands which piano and stage of work they are responsible for.

Where collection is from a seller, school, venue or another household, confirm the release contact and appointment requirements. Ask whether the piano is ready for the assessed move and whether any separate preparation remains outstanding. Include accompanying items in the inventory and agree the condition record used at handover. The collection team should not be expected to settle a purchase dispute or determine which accessories belong to the instrument on arrival.

If storage is requested, describe the period and provide any conditions specified by the manufacturer, technician or insurer. Ask whether the proposed arrangement is appropriate rather than treating all storage as equivalent. Explain whether the instrument needs to be accessed or moved again before final delivery. Include the eventual return in the enquiry where possible so the storage stage has a defined relationship with the rest of the relocation.

Confirm the agreed move and plan the instrument's next stage

Review the written quotation for the instrument, addresses, access route, preparation and delivery placement it covers. Ask how changes to stairs, loading position or timing should be handled. Discuss value information and applicable terms before booking, including any requirements from your own insurer. A piano-moving price should be compared alongside its accepted scope; two proposals may involve different assumptions about preparation, access or additional services.

Choose a receiving person who can confirm the agreed placement and check the physical handover. Retain the inventory and any known condition notes, and raise questions through the named contact. Arrange tuning or technical checks separately with an appropriate piano technician, following the advice relevant to your instrument and circumstances. Delivery completion is a transport milestone, not a statement that the piano has been serviced or adjusted for use in its new room.
